Sebehorric Dermatitis on scalp for HairTalk1

What Is Seborrheic Dermatitis?

Have you ever noticed flaky scales on your scalp or some parts of your body like the face, nose, chest, and back? If so, then it's a symptom of Seborrheic Dermatitis. Seborrheic Dermatitis affects both young and old and is often called cradle cap in infants. It's a condition whereby your scalp is red with scaly patches and flakes. This condition is a chronic form of eczema that can be cured with or without treatment. Fortunately, it's not contagious, so you can't get it from someone else.

There are 2 main causes of Seborrheic Dermatitis

Cause #1: Malassezia yeast

Malassezia yeast is a substance found in the skin, however, its unusual growth causes inflammatory changes in the body. These changes include increased oil production which can lead to Seborrheic Dermatitis. It occurs in infants as a result of the parent's hormonal changes during pregnancy.

Cause #2: Excessive production of oil

Excessive amounts of oil on the skin and scalp can also cause Seborrheic Dermatitis. It can be an irritant that causes your skin to be greasy and red. It can also be related to hormone production. Hence, the condition appears in the area with many sebaceous glands. Areas like the scalp, the face, arms, back, groins, etc.

In addition, some severe health conditions like HIV, Psoriasis or Parkinson's disease can increase a person's risk of contracting Seborrheic Dermatitis. Other triggers can include - stress, hormonal imbalance, harsh soaps or detergents, environment and genetics.

How Seborrheic Dermatitis Affects the Scalp

Seborrheic Dermatitis mostly affects the scalp and hairline and looks like dandruff. Dandruff is a common symptom of Dermatitis and is seen as powdery pieces or particles of dead skin. You'll see it when you scratch the scalp, and some particles fall out. Thus, it's important to treat the condition as soon as possible to prevent secondary infection.
